Re: “Rod Love, a grizzly in politics, a teddy bear at home,” Don Braid, Opinion, Oct. 29, and “Rod Love was the Love story behind Ralph Klein,” Don Martin, Opinion, Oct. 28.
When is it OK to start telling the truth about Rod Love’s lasting negative influence on our province? While I can appreciate that his family and friends think the best of him, and it is only natural for them to want to remember him in a certain way, the rest of us have to live with the social and infrastructure deficits that he and King Ralph brought to this province.
The current school and hospital building frenzy is a direct consequence of their shortsighted, mean-spirited and divisive policies. During Klein’s reign, under Love’s tutelage, schools were closed, a hospital blown up, roads and sewers left in disrepair and social supports for our most vulnerable were minimized. Our province will continue to pay the costs for this ill-conceived experiment in social and fiscal ultraconservatism for many years to come. Yes, Love may have been a nice man in person, but his and his master’s influence on this province was nothing short of devastating.
